One day, Amy Kenny was at a church. She’s a scholar and a writer and she gets around in a wheelchair. For someone who lives with a visible disability, church can be a tough place. You can get overwhelmed with rapid-fire questions about your health or denied when looking for something to help you join in. And, of course, there are folks who believe that if you really had faith, Jesus would heal you. The simplest thing to do in that situation is to smile and nod, accept a well-meaning prayer or blessing, and move on. But something different happened that day. When a stranger told Amy: “God told me to pray for you, God wants to heal you!,” Amy responded: “I don’t need prayer for healing. My body has already been sanctified and redeemed.”(1)
