Sometimes it’s easier to mis-describe prayer than to describe it. There’s a stand-up comic named Emo Philips who once put it this way:
“I believe very strongly in the power of prayer. When I was a little boy, I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized the Lord, in his wisdom, doesn’t work that way. So, I just stole one and asked him to forgive me. Then I got it. Of course, now I prayer a simple prayer every morning. It’s an ecumenical prayer… I think it speaks to the heart of every faith. It goes: Lord, please break the laws of the universe for my convenience. Amen.”1
