Sirach 24:1-12

1 WisdomI praisesII herselfIII
I “wisdom” = sophia. From sophos (wise, clever, skilled, learned, cultivated); related to saphes (clear). This is skill, wisdom, insight, intelligence, clarity. It is wisdom as applied through a practical skill or shrewdness. It is not thoughtfulness or the mere gaining of intelligence for its own sake. Sophia is wisdom in action for everyday living.
II “praises” = aineo. 8x in NT. From ainos (praise, saying, story, proverb). This is to praise.
III “herself” = psuche. From psucho (to breathe, blow). This is breath, the breath of life, the self, individual, soul. This is the word for that which makes a person unique – their identity, will, personality, affections. This isn’t the soul as the immortal part of us, but as our individuality. It is also not life as a general concept, but specific to people. This is where the words psyche and psychology come from.
and tells of her gloryIV in the midstV of her people.VI
IV “tells of…glory” = kauchaomai. Perhaps from auxen (neck). This is literally holding one’s head high – to boast proudly or to glory, joy, exult, rejoice. It can be boasting in a positive or negative sense.
V “midst” = mesos. Perhaps from meta (with among, behind, beyond; implies a change following contact or action). This is middle, among, center, midst.
VI “people” = laos. This is the people or crowd – often used for the chosen people. This is where the word “laity” comes from.

and in the presence ofXI his hostsXII she tells of her glory:
VII “assembly” = ekklesia. From ek (from, out from) + kaleo (to call by name, invite, to name, bid, summon, call aloud) {related to keleuo (to command, order, direct); from kelomai (to urge on)}. This is properly a calling out or an assembly. It was used to refer to a church.
VIII “Most High” = hupistos. 13x in NT. From hupsos (height, high position, heaven, dignity, eminence; elevation, altitude; to be exalted); from hupsi (on high, aloft); from huper (over, above, beyond) This is highest, heights, heaven. It can also refer to God as Most High or the Supreme One.
IX “opens” = anoigo. From ana (up, back, again, among, between, anew) + oigo (to open). This is to open in literal or figurative sense.
X “mouth” = stoma. Perhaps from tomoteros (sharp, keener); from temno (to cut). This is mouth, speech, language, the tip of a sword, an opening in the ground.
XI “in the presence of” = enanti. 2x in NT. From en (in, on, at, by, with) + anti (opposite, instead of, against). This is before or in the presence of.
XII “hosts” = dunamis. From dunamai (to be able, have power or ability). This is might, strength, physical power, efficacy, energy, and miraculous power. It is force literally or figuratively – the power of a miracle or the miracle itself.
3 “I came forthXIII from the mouth of the Most High
and coveredXIV the earthXV like a mist.XVI
XIII “came forth” = exerchomai. From ek (from, from out of) + erchomai (to come, go). This is to go out, depart, escape, proceed from, spread news abroad.
XIV “covered” = katakalupto. 3x in NT. From a (not, without) + katakalupto (to cover, veil, hide); {from kata (down, against, throughout, among) + kalupto (to cover, hide, conceal; figuratively, to keep hidden or secret) {related to kalube (hut, cabin)}}. This is uncovered or unveiled.
XV “earth” = ge. This is earth, land, soil, region, country, the inhabitants of an area.
XVI “mist” = homichle. 1x in NT. It may come from a word that means to cover. This is mist or fog in a literal or figurative sense.

and my throneXIX was in a pillarXX of cloud.XXI
XVII “encamped” = kataskenoo. 4x in NT. From kata (down, against, throughout, among) + skenoo (to encamp, pitch a tent, dwell); {from skenos (tent, booth, tabernacle, or dwelling)}. It could be a cloth hut. This is a tent in a literal or figurative sense ); {perhaps related to skeuos (vessel, tool, container, implement; also vessel in a figurative or literal sense) or perhaps related to skia (shadow, thick darkness, outline; figurative for a spiritual situation that is good or bad)}. This is to encamp or dwell. It is used figuratively for to lodge, stay or rest.
XVIII “heights” = hupselos. Related to “Most High” in v2. 12x in NT– in Matthew’s and Luke’s Temptation story as well as Matthew and Mark’s Transfiguration accounts. From hupsos (see note VIII above). This is high, lofty, or exalted. It can be lofty in elevation or in character.
XIX “throne” = thronos. Probably from thanos (bench); from thrao (to sit). This is throne or seat – the place where the king sits. So, it is used figuratively to mean power, dominion, or a potentate. This is where the word “throne” comes from.
XX “pillar” = stulos. 4x in NT– all used figuratively. Perhaps from stuo (to stiffen); maybe akin to histemi (to stand, place, set up, establish, stand ready, stand firm, be steadfast). This is pillar or column. Figuratively, it can mean a support like a pillar of the church.
XXI “cloud” = nephele. From nephos (cloud; figurative for a great crowd or multitude). This is cloud or cloudiness.

XXII “alone” = monos. Perhaps from meno (to stay, abide, wait, endure). This is alone, single, remaining, mere, desolate.
XXIII “compassed” = kukloo. 5x in NT. From the same as kuklo (circle, surrounding); from kuklos (circle, ring). This is to encircle, surround, gather. It is where the word “cycle” comes from.

XXV “heaven” = ouranos. May be related to oros (mountain, hill); probably related to airo (raise, take up, lift, remove). This is the air, the sky, the atmosphere, and heaven. It is the sky that is visible and the spiritual heaven where God dwells. Heaven implies happiness, power, and eternity.
and traversedXXVI the depthsXXVII of the abyss.XXVIII
XXVI “traversed” = peripateo. From peri (about, concerning, around, encompassing) + pateo (to read, trample on; to trample literally or figuratively); {from patos (trodden) OR from paio (to strike, smite, sting; a hit like a single blow)}. This is to walk. Going from Hebrew figurative language, to walk referred to how you conducted your life, how you chose to live. This word is most literally walking around. Figuratively, it is living, behaving, following, how you occupy yourself. This is where “peripatetic” comes from.
XXVII “depths” = bathus. 4x in NT. Perhaps from the same root as basis (step, foot); from baino (to walk, go). This is deep or profound in a literal or figurative sense. It can also mean very early.
XXVIII “abyss” = abussos. Related to “depths” in v5. 9x in NT. From a (not, without) + buthos (deep, bottom, deep sea); {akin to bathos (depth, fullness, profundity, or immensity); from bathus (deep in a literal or figurative sense); from the same root as basis (step, foot); from baino (see note XXVII above)}. This is boundless, bottomless – literally without depth. It can imply the realm of the dead and evil spirits – the infernal abyss. This is where the word “abyss” comes from.
6 Over wavesXXIX of the sea,XXX over allXXXI the earth,
and over everyXXXII people and nationXXXIII I have held sway.XXXIV
XXIX “waves” = kuma. 5x in NT. From kuo (to swell as one pregnant). This is a wave, billow, curve, or bend.
XXX “sea” = thalassa. Perhaps from hals (sea, salt, a boy of saltwater) or halas (salt; can be figurative for prudence). This is the sea, a lake, or seashore.
XXXI “all” = pas. This is all or every.
XXXII “every” = pas. Same as “all” in v6. See note XXXI above.
XXXIII “nation” = ethnos. Probably from etho (a custom or culture). This is people who are united by having similar customs or culture. Generally, it is used to refer to Gentiles. This is a tribe, race, nation, or Gentiles in general. This is where the term “ethnicity” comes from.
XXXIV “held sway” = ktaomai. 7x in NT. This is to get, purchase, acquire, gain.

in whose inheritanceXXXVII should I abide?XXXVIII
XXXV “sought” = zeteo. This is to seek, search for, desire. It is searching for something by inquiring or investigation. It can be seek in a literal or figurative sense. There is a Hebrew figure of speech “to seek God’s face” so it can also mean to worship God. Alternately, you could seek someone’s life i.e. plot to kill them.
XXXVI “resting place” = anapausis. 5x in NT– including “you will find rest for your souls” from Matthew 11:29. From anapauo (a break from work, which implies being refreshed; denotes that rest that one gets once a necessary task is finished); {from ana (up, again, back, among, between, anew) + pauo (to stop, refrain, pause, restrain, quit, come to an end)}. This is an intermission, refreshment, recreation, rest from work. It can also refer to inner tranquility.
XXXVII “inheritance” = kleronomia. 14x in NT. From kleronomos (heir); {from kleros (lot, portion, heritage; that share assigned to you; also a lot used to determine something by fate, chance, or divine will); {perhaps from klero (casting a lot) or from klao (to break in pieces as one breaks bread)} + the same as nomos (what is assigned – usage, law, custom, principle; used for the law in general or of God’s law; sometimes used to refer to the first five books of the Bible or the entire Old Testament; also used to refer to theology or the practice and tradition of interpreting and implementing the law of God); {from nemo (to parcel out, assign)}}. This is inheritance, heritage, or possession.
XXXVIII “abide” = aulizomai. 2x in NT. From aule (to inquire, question, examine precisely, test with questions); {from ek (from, from out of) + etazo (to examine)}. This is to spend the night, lodge, abide.
8 “Then the CreatorXXXIX of all thingsXL gave me a command,XLI
XXXIX “Creator” = ktistes. Related to “held sway” in v6. 1x in NT. From ktizo (to build, create, form, shape; God’s acts of creation); probably akin to ktaomai (see note XXXIV above). This is a creator or founder of a town. It is used for God as the creator.
XL “all things” = hapas. Related to “all” in v6. From hama (at once, together with) + pas (see note XXXI above) OR from a (with) + pas (see above). This is all; every part working together as a unit.
XLI “gave…a command” = entellomai. 15x in NT. From en (in, on, at, by, with) + tellomai (to accomplish); {related to telos (end, event, purpose, consummation)}. This is to charge or command – focuses on the final objective. So, this is looking at the final outcome of the command – how things will end up.

XLII “Creator” = ktizo. Related to “held sway” in v6 & “Creator” in v8. 15x in NT. See note XXXIX above.
XLIII “pitched” = katapauo. Related to “resting place” in v7. 4x in NT. From kata (down, against, among) + pauo (see note XXXVI above). This is to rest, restrain, cease.
XLIV “tent” = skene. Related to “encamped” in v4. Perhaps related to skeuos (see note XVII above). This is a tent, booth, tabernacle, or dwelling. It could be a cloth hut. This is a tent in a literal or figurative sense.
He said,XLV ‘Encamp in Jacob,XLVI
and in IsraelXLVII receive your inheritance.’XLVIII
XLV “said” = epo. This is to answer, speak, command. It can be verbal or in writing.
XLVI “Jacob” = Iakob. From Hebrew Yaaqob (Jacob); from the same as aqeb (heel, hind part, hoof, rear guard of an army, one who lies in wait, usurper). This is James, meaning heel grabber or usurper.
XLVII “Israel” = Israel. From Hebrew Yisrael (God strives or one who strives with God; new name for Jacob and for his offspring); {from sarah (to persist, exert oneself, contend, persevere, wrestle, prevail) + El (God or god)}. This is Israel the people and the land.
XLVIII “receive…inheritance” = katakleronomeo. Related to “inheritance” in v7. 1x in NT. From kata (down, against, according to, among) + kleronomeo (see note XXXVII above). This is to apportion according to lots, particularly an estate or inheritance.
9 Before the ages,XLIX in the beginning,L he createdLI me,
and for all the ages I shall not cease to be.LII
XLIX “ages” = aion. From the same as aei (ever, always, unceasingly, perpetually; on every occasion). This is an age, cycle of time, course, continued duration. It is also used to describe the eternal or forever. This is the word used to discuss the present age or the messianic age.
L “beginning” = arche. From archomai (to begin or rule); from archo (to rule, begin, have first rank or have political power). Properly, this is what is first. In a temporal sense, that is beginning or origin. It can also refer to the one who ranks first, i.e. king or ruler. So, it can also be magistrate, power, or principality. It can be used more generally for what is preeminent.
LI “created” = ktizo. Same as “Creator” in v8. See note XLII above.
LII “cease to be” = ekleipo. 4x in NT. From ek (from, from out of) + leipo (to leave behind, remain, lack, abandon, fall behind while racing). This is to leave out, omit, cease, be obscured, die out.

and so I was establishedLVI in Zion.LVII
LIII “holy” = hagios. From hagnos (holy, sacred, pure ethically, ritually, or ceremonially; prepared for worship, chaste, unadulterated, pure to the core; undefiled by sin; figurative for innocent, modest, perfect). God is totally different from humanity and thus set apart. That which is consecrated to worship God (elements of worship) or to serve God (as the saints) are holy because they are now set apart for God’s purposes. Holy because important to God. This is sacred physically, pure. It can be morally blameless or ceremonially consecrated.
LIV “ministered” = leitourgeo. Related to “people” in v1. 3x in NT. From leitourgos (minister, servant; used for a public official or for one who works in a temple; broadly, it is one in public service, whether civic or religious); {from laos (see note VI above) + ergon (work, task, action, employment); {from erdo (to do)}}. This is to minister or serve the public in an authorized capacity. It can also be to act in a charitable capacity.
LV “before” = enopios. From en (in, on, at, by, with) + ops (eye, face); {from optanomai (to appear, be seen); from horao (become, seem, appear)}. This is literally “in sight of.” It means before in a literal or figurative sense.
LVI “established” = sterizo. Related to “pillar” in v4. 13x in NT. From sterigx (a support, plant down); perhaps from histemi (see note XX above). This is to make fast, support, strengthen, establish, fix firmly, to go resolutely.
LVII “Zion” = Sion. 7x in NT. From Hebrew tsiyyon (Zion – a mountain in Jerusalem as well as another name for Jerusalem itself or the people); related to tsyiyyun (signpost, monument); from tsavah (to charge someone, to command, order); from the same as tsiyyah (dryness drought); from a root meaning parched as desert, dry land. This is Zion – the mountain in Jerusalem, the city, or its people. Also used figuratively to refer to the church.

LVIII “thus” = homoios. From homoios (similar to, resembling, like); from the same as homou (together); from homos (the same). This is likewise or equally.
LIX “beloved” = agapao. Perhaps from agan (much). This is love, longing for, taking pleasure in. It is divine love or human love that echoes divine love.
LX “city” = polis. This is a city or its inhabitants. It is a town of variable size, but one that has walls. This is where “metropolis” and “police” come from.
LXI “gave…a resting place” = katapauo. Same as “pitched” in v8. See note XLIII above.
LXII “Jerusalem” = Ierousalem. From Hebrew Yerushalaim (probably foundation of peace); {from yarah (to throw, shoot, be stunned; to flow as water so figuratively to instruct or teach) + shalam (to make amends, to be complete or sound)}. This is Jerusalem, dwelling of peace.
LXIII “domain” = exousia. From exesti (to be permitted or lawful); {from ek (out, out of) + eimi (to be, exist)}. This is power to act or weight. It especially denotes moral authority or influence. It can mean domain, liberty, freedom, capacity, mastery, right, force, or strength.
12 I took rootLXIV in an honoredLXV people;
in the portionLXVI of the LordLXVII is my inheritance.
LXIV “took root” = rhizoo. 2x in NT. From rhiza (a root literally or figuratively; the root of what comes from it – shoot, source, descendant). This is to root, plant, establish. Figuratively, it refers to firmness and stability.
LXV “honored” = doxazo. From doxa (glory, opinion, praise, honor, renown; particularly used as a quality of God or manifestation of God – splendor); from dokeo (to have an opinion, seem, appear, suppose; a personal judgment; to think); from dokos (opinion). This is to render or hold something as glorious, to glorify, honor, magnify, or celebrate. This is ascribing weight to something by recognizing its true value or essence.
LXVI “portion” = meris. From meros (a part or share, portion); from meiromai (to get one’s allotment or portion). This is portion, share, district. It can be literal or figurative.
LXVII “Lord” = kurios. From kuros (authority, supremacy). This is a respectful address meaning master or sir. It refers to one who has control or power greater than one’s own. So, it was also applied to God and Jesus as Master or Lord.
