Notes on verse 6

A “received” = paralambano. From para (beside, by, in the presence of) + lambano (active acceptance/taking of what is available or what has been offered; emphasizes the choice and action of the individual). This is to receive, take, acknowledge, associate with. It can also mean to take on an office or to learn.
B “Christ” = Christos. From chrio (consecrate by anointing with oil; often done for prophets, priests, or kings). Literally, the anointed one, Christ. The Greek word for Messiah.
C “Jesus” = Iesous. From Hebrew Yehoshua (Joshua, the Lord is salvation); {from YHVH (proper name of the God of Israel; the self-existent and eternal one); {from havah (to become) or from hayah (to come to pass, become, be)} + yasha (to deliver, defend, help, preserve, rescue; properly, to be open, wide or free, which implies being safe. So, in a causative sense, this is to free someone)}. This is Jesus or Joshua in Greek – the Lord saves or the Lord is salvation.
D “Lord” = Kurios. From kuros (authority, supremacy). This is a respectful address meaning master or sir. It refers to one who has control or power greater than one’s own. So, it was also applied to God and Jesus as Master or Lord.
E “continue to walk” = peripateo. From peri (about, concerning, around, encompassing) + pateo (to read, trample on; to trample literally or figuratively); {from patos (trodden) OR from paio (to strike, smite, sting; a hit like a single blow)}. This is to walk. Going from Hebrew figurative language, to walk referred to how you conducted your life, how you chose to live. This word is most literally walking around. Figuratively, it is living, behaving, following, how you occupy yourself. This is where “peripatetic” comes from.

Notes on verse 7a

F “rooted” = rhizoo. 2x in NT. From rhiza (a root literally or figuratively; the root of what comes from it – shoot, source, descendant). This is to root, plant, establish. Figuratively, it refers to firmness and stability.
G “built up” = epoikodomeo. 7x in NT. From epi (on, upon, against, what is fitting) + oikodomeo (to build a house or be a house builder. Figuratively, it can mean to edify or encourage, be strong or embolden); {from oikos (house – the building, the household, the family, descendants; the temple) + domeo (to build)}. This is to build or build on. It is building done on top of a foundation done according to specifications. Figuratively, it can be to raise someone.
H “established in” = bebaioo. 8x in NT. From bebaios (properly, ground that is solid enough to walk over; firm, unshakable; figuratively, guaranteed, valid, sure, steadfast, enduring; literally and figuratively “solid footing”); from the same as basis (a step; hence, a foot, pace, or base); from baino (to walk or go). This is secure, guarantee, reliable, firm, dependable. It is something that you can put your trust in.
I “faith” = pistis. From peitho (to have confidence, urge, be persuaded, agree, assure, believe, have confidence, trust). This is less about knowing, believing, and repeating a list of doctrines then it is about trusting God. Faith means listening to God and seeking to live a holy life even (and especially) when we don’t understand how everything works or fits together. Faith is about being faithful (trusting and doing) rather than being all knowing.

Notes on verse 7b

J “taught” = didasko. From dao (learn). This is to teach, direct, instruct, or impart knowledge. In the New Testament, this is almost always used for teaching scripture.
K “abounding” = perisseuo. From perissos (abundant, more, excessive, advantage, vehemently); from peri (all-around, encompassing, excess). This is more than what is ordinary or necessary. It is abounding, overflowing, being leftover, going above and beyond. It is super-abounding in number or quality.
L “thanksgiving” = eucharistia. 15x in NT. From eucharistos (thankful, well favored); {from eu (good, well, well done, rightly) + charis (grace, kindness, favor, gratitude, thanks; being inclined to or favorable towards – leaning towards someone to share some good or benefit; literal, figurative, or spiritual; grace as abstract concept, manner, or action); {from chairo (to rejoice, be glad or cheerful; a greeting); from char– (to extend favor, lean towards, be inclined to be favorable towards)}}. This is thankfulness or thanksgiving. It is active gratitude. It is related to the word “eucharist.”

Notes on verse 8a

M “watch out” = blepo. This is literally to see – it is primarily used in the physical sense. However, figuratively it can be seeing, which includes attention and so to watchfulness, being observant, perceiving, and acting on the visual information. It can also mean beware.
N {untranslated} = eimi. This is to be, exist.
O “takes…captive” = sulagogeo. 1x in NT. From the same as sulao (to plunder, rob, seize as in battle); {from sule (booty) or from sullo (to strip); probably related to haireomai (to take, choose, or prefer); probably related to airo (raise, take up, lift, remove)} + ago (lead, bring, carry, guide, drive, go). This is to plunder, take as spoil, seize like a predator does its prey, take a captive, seduce.

Notes on verse 8b

P “philosophy” = philosophia. 1x in NT. From philosophos (philosopher; a friend of wisdom); {from philos (dear, beloved, a friend, an associate; friendship with personal affection, a trusted confidante; love from personal experience with another person) + sophos (wise, clever, skilled, learned, cultivated); {related to saphes (clear)}}. This is philosophy, love of wisdom. It is where the word philosophy comes from.
Q “empty” = kenos. 18x in NT. Properly, this is something that is empty or void. Hence, it is worthless, foolish, ineffective, morally void, pretentious, unreal, or false.
R “deceit” = apate. 7x in NT. Perhaps from apatao (to deceive, seduce, cheat, delude; focuses on the method used to lure astray). This is deception, cheating, treachery, fraud.

Notes on verse 8c

S “human” = anthropos. Probably from aner (man, male, husband) + ops (eye, face); {from optanomai (to appear, be seen); perhaps from horao (become, seem, appear)}. This is human, humankind. Used for all genders.
T “tradition” = paradosis. 13x in NT. From paradidomi (literally to hand over – hence to deliver, abandon, or betray. It implies a personal involvement); {from para (from beside, by) + didomi (give, offer, place, bestow, deliver; give in a literal or figurative sense)}. This is something handed down or handed over. So, it could be some kind of instruction, ordinance, or tradition. It can be used to refer to the tradition of the elders within Judaism.
U “elemental principles” = stoicheion. 7x in NT. From the same as stoicheo (walking in rows, according to a uniform cadence; it can be marching in military style; figuratively, it is one’s walk of life, living piously); from stoichos (a row) or from steicho (in a line). This is part of a row. So, it could be a letter in the alphabet, something rudimentary or a fundamental element of something else. Figuratively, it is primary principles that are orderly. It can aso refer to heavenly bodies or core sensibility.
V “world” = kosmos. Perhaps from the base of komizo (to carry, convey, recover); from komeo (to take care of). This is order, the world, the universe, including its inhabitants. Literally, this is something that is ordered so it can refer to all creation. It can also refer to decoration in the sense that something is better ordered and, thus, made more beautiful. This is where “cosmos” and “cosmetics” come from.

Notes on verse 9

W “whole” = pas. This is all or every.
X “fullness” = pleroma. 18x in NT. From pleroo (to fill, make full or complete; properly, filling something up to the maximum extent or induvial capacity; used figuratively for furnish, influence, satisfy, finish, preach, perfect, and fulfill); from pleres (to be full, complete, abounding in, occupied with). This is fullness, supply, completion, superabundance, or multitude.
Y “deity” = theotes. 1x in NT. From theos (God, a god). This is deity or divinity.
Z “dwells” = katoikeo. Related to “built up” in v7. From kata (down, against, throughout, among) + oikeo (to settle or be established somewhere in a permanent way, to make a home or live at home); {from oikos (see note G above)}. This is to live or settle on a permanent basis.
AA “bodily” = somatikos. 1x in NT. From somatikos (bodily, physical); from soma (body or flesh; body in a literal or figurative sense; the body of Christ); perhaps from sozo (to save, heal, rescue); from sos (safe, well, rescued). This is bodily or physically.

CC “come to fullness” = pleroo. Related to “fullness” in v9. See note X above.
DD “is” = eimi. Same as {untranslated} in v8. See note N above.
EE “head” = kephale. This is head or chief. It can be a literal head or, figuratively, a ruler or lord. It can also refer to a corner stone. This is where the word “cephalic” comes from.

Notes on verse 10b

FF “every” = pas. Same as “whole” in v9. See note W above.
GG “ruler” = arche. From archomai (to begin or rule); from archo (to rule, begin, have first rank or have political power). Properly, this is what is first. In a temporal sense, that is beginning or origin. It can also refer to the one who ranks first, i.e. king or ruler. So, it can also be magistrate, power, or principality. It can be used more generally for what is preeminent.
HH “authority” = exousia. Related to {untranslated} in v8. From exesti (to be permitted or lawful); {from ek (out, out of) + eimi (see note N above)}. This is power to act or weight. It especially denotes moral authority or influence. It can mean domain, liberty, freedom, capacity, mastery, right, force, or strength.

Notes on verse 11a

II “were circumcised” = peritemno. 18x in NT. From peri (about, concerning, all around, encompassing) + same as tomos or tomoteros (sharp or keener); {from temno (to cut as with a single slice)}. This is to circumcise – literally to cut around.
JJ “spiritual” = acheiropoietos. 3x in NT. From a (not, without) + cheiropoietos (literally made by hand, i.e. artificial; to perform); {from cheir (literally, hand; figuratively, the means a person uses to accomplish things; power, means, or instrument.) + poieo (to make, do, act, construct, abide, or cause)}. This is literally not made by hand i.e. unmanufactured.
KK “circumcision” = peritome. Related to “were circumcised” in v11. From peritemno (see note II above). This is properly, cut around, referring to the way that foreskin is removed and so this is to circumcise. It can be used or the rite or the people who are circumcised – in a literal or figurative sense.

Notes on verse 11b

LL “removal” = apekdusis. 1x in NT. From apekduomai (to strip off, disarm, lay aside); {from apo (from, away from) + ekduo (to strip off or take off); {from ek (from, from out of) + duo (to sink)}}. This is stripping off, removal – like taking off clothing.
MM “body” = soma. Related to “bodily” in v9. See note AA above.
NN “flesh” = sarx. May be from saroo (to sweep, cleanse by sweeping); from sairo (to brush off). This is flesh, the body, human nature, materiality, kindred. Flesh is not always evil in scripture (as when it refers to Jesus taking on a human body). However, it is generally used in a negative way for actions made selfishly and not through faith. This can mean animal flesh, i.e. meat, or refer to body in contrast to soul/spirit. Flesh can be a way of talking about how things or people are related or talking about human frailty (physical or moral).

Notes on verse 12a

OO “buried with” = sunthapto. 2x in NT. From sun (with, together with) + thapto (to bury, hold a funeral). This is to bury with.
PP “baptism” = baptismos. 5x in NT. From baptizo (to submerge, wash, or immerse; used specially for baptism); from bapto (to dip or dye; to entirely cover with liquid, to stain). This is washing or baptism.
QQ “raised with” = sunegeiro. 3x in NT. From sun (with, together with) + egeiro (to awake, raise up or lift up; to get up from sitting or lying down, to get up from sleeping, to rise from a disease or from death; figuratively, rising from inactivity or from ruins). This is to raise together with literally or figuratively. It can also refer to spiritual renewal.

Notes on verse 12b

RR “power” = energeia. 8x in NT. From energes (active, effective, operative, energized, powerful); {from en (in, at, by, with, among) + ergon (word, task, action, employment); {from ergo (to work, accomplish) or from erdo (to do)}}. This is activity, working, efficiency, strong, or divine energy. It is also where the work “energy” comes from.
SS “God” = Theos. Related to “deity” in v9. See note Y above.
TT “raised” = egeiro. Related to “raised with” in v12. Se note QQ above.
UU “dead” = nekros. Perhaps from nekus (corpse). This is dead or lifeless, mortal, corpse. It can also be used figuratively for powerless or ineffective. It is where the word “necrotic” comes from.

13 And when you were dead in trespassesVV and the uncircumcisionWW of your flesh, God made you alive together withXX him, when he forgaveYY us allZZ our trespasses, 

Notes on verse 13

VV “trespasses” = paraptoma. From para (by, beside, in the presence of) + pipto (to fall in a literal or figurative sense). This is properly, falling away after having been devout or faithful. So, this is a lapse, sin, slip, transgression, offense. It is a deviation from what is true – it could be accidental or unconscious.
WW “uncircumcision” = akrobustia. Perhaps from akron (end, tip, top, extreme); {related to akantha (thorn bush, thorn); from ake (point, edge)} + posthe (penis). This is foreskin – so, someone who is not circumcised or a Gentile.
XX “made…alive together with” = suzoopoieo. Related to “spiritual” in v11. 2x in NT. From sun (with, together with) + zoopoieo (to bring life to something, including something that was dead. This can also be to revitalize in a literal or figurative sense); {from the same as zoon (literally a thing that is alive; so, an animal or living creature); {from zao (to live literally or figuratively)} + poieo (see note JJ above)}}. This is alive together, to revive or reanimate together in a literal or figurative sense.
YY “forgave” = charizomai. Related to “thanksgiving” in v7. From charis (see note L above). This is to extend grace or favor, to grant forgiveness, to pardon or rescue.
ZZ “all” = pas. Same as “whole” in v9. See note W above.

Notes on verse 14a

AAA “erasing” = exaleipho. 5x in NT. From ek (from, from out of) + aleipho (to anoint as an act of homage, for healing, to celebrate a festival, to honor a guest, as anointing the dead); {from a (with, together with) + liparos (oil, fatty; figuratively, something rich or luxurious); {from lipos (fat, grease)}}. This is to wipe out, smear, remove, plaster, blot out (so, erase). Figuratively, it can also mean cancelling a duty or forgiving a sin.
BBB “record” = cheirographon. Related to “spiritual” in v11. 1x in NT. From cheir (see note JJ above) + grapho (to write, describe). This is a written document, manuscript, note listing debts.
CCC “stood against” = eimi + hupenantios. Eimi is the same as {untranslated} in v8. See note N above. Hupenantios is 2x in NT. From hupo (by, under, about, subordinate to) + enantios (opposite, contrary, antagonistic); {from en (in, on, at, with) + antios (set against)}. This is opposite, hostile, contrary, opponent.
DDD “legal demands” = dogma. 5x in NT. From dokeo (to have an opinion, seem, appear, suppose; a personal judgment; to think); {from dokos (opinion). This is opinion, ordinance, or decree. It could be civil or religious. It is where the word “dogma” comes from.

Notes on verse 14b

EEE “set…aside” = airo + ek + ho + mesos.  Airo is related to “takes…captive” in v8. See note O above. Mesos is perhaps from meta (with among, behind, beyond; implies a change following contact or action). This is middle, among, center, midst.
FFF “nailing” = proseloo. 1x in NT. From pros (at, to, toward, with) + related to helos (nail, spike). This is to nail, spike fast.
GGG “cross” = stauros. From the same as histemi (to stand, cause to stand). This is an upright stake, cross. Literally refers to the horizontal beam of a Roman cross, generally carried by the one convicted to die.

Notes on verse 15

HHH “disarmed” = apekduomai. Related to “removal” in v11. 2x in NT. See note LL above.
III “public” = parresia. Related to “whole” in v9. From pas (see note W above) + rhesis (speech); {from rheo (say, speak of, command)}. This is confidence, openness, boldness, outspokenness. It can imply assurance – free speech.
JJJ “made a…example” = deigmatizo. 2x in NT. From deigma (example, type); from deiknumi (to show, demonstrate, teach, make known). This is to expose, show as an example, display.
KKK “triumphing” = thriambeuo. 2x in NT. From thriambos (holiday song sung to Bacchus) OR from throeo (to be disturbed, unsettled, troubled; feeling the desire to scream from fear, very upset, startled); {from throos (noise, tumult) + haptomai (a touch that has an impact on what is being touched – it has an influence on the recipient so that the recipient is changed)}. This is to triumph. It is conquering another and parading them publicly as a prisoner. Alternately, it could be a noisy procession in honor of Bacchus.

Notes on verse 16a

LLL “condemn” = krino. To judge, decide, think good, condemn, determine, pass judgment, stand trial, sue. This is judging whether it is done in court or in a private setting. Properly, it refers to mentally separating or distinguishing an issue – to come to a choice or decision, to judge positively or negatively in seeking what is right or wrong, who is innocent or guilty. It can imply trying, condemning, punishing, or avenging.
MMM “food” = brosis. 11x in NT. From bibrosko (to eat). This is food and the act of eating. It is eating in a literal or figurative sense.
NNN “drink” = posis. 3x in NT. From pino (to drink – literally or figuratively). This is drinking or a drink.

Notes on verse 16b

OOO “observing” = meros. From meiromai (to get your allotment or portion). This is a part, a share, or a portion.
PPP “festivals” = heorte. This is a holiday or feast.
QQQ “new moons” = noumenia. 1x in NT. From neomenia (new moon); {from neos (young, new, youth, person) + men (month, determined by the moon)}. This is new moon – can refer to the festival on that date.
RRR “Sabbaths” = sabbaton. From Hebrew shabbath (sabbath); from shabath (to rest, stop, repose, cease working; by implication, to celebrate). This is the sabbath. It can also be used as shorthand for a week i.e. the time between two sabbaths.

Notes on verses 17-18a

SSS “shadow” = skia. 7x in NT. This is shade, shadow, outline. It can also metaphorically refer to a spiritual reality whether positive or negative.
TTT “come” = mello. Perhaps from melo (something that one is worried or concerned about, something one pays attention to or thinks about). Properly, this is ready, about to happen, to intend, delay, or linger. This is just on the point of acting.
UUU “disqualify” = katabrabeuo. 1x in NT. From kata (down, against, throughout, among) + brabeuo (to rule, be an umpire, prevail); {from the same as brabeion (prize given to a winner, prize from a public contest); from brabeus (umpire)}. This is to make a ruling against, condemn, perhaps a wrong call that prevent someone from getting a prize they deserve. Figuratively, it could be leading believers astray.

Notes on verse 18b

VVV “insisting” = thelo. This is to wish, desire, will, or intend. It is to choose or prefer in a literal or figurative sense. It can also mean inclined toward or take delight in. It can have a sense of being ready to act on the impulse in question.
WWW “self-abasement” = tapeinophrosune. 8x in NT. From tapeinos (low in position, depressed, low in circumstance; fig humiliated, low in spirit) + the base of phren (literally the diaphragm; used figuratively for heart, thought, or understanding; personal outlook we use to decide our actions, general outlook); {may be from phrao (to rein in, curb)}. This is humility, modesty. It is lowly or a humble mind.
XXX “worship” = threskeia. Related to “triumphing” in v15. 4x in NT. From threskos (religious, devout, or pious; one who carefully adheres to religious requirements); probably from the base of throeo (to be disturbed, unsettled, troubled; feeling the desire to scream from fear, very upset, startled); from throos (noise, tumult). This is religion or worship. Specifically, it refers to ritual observance.
YYY “angels” = aggelos. Related to “takes…captive” in v8. Probably from ago (see note O above) + agele (flock, herd, drove); {also from ago (see above)}. This is angel or messenger. Properly, it is one sent with news or to perform a specific task. This messenger can be human or an angel from heaven. More commonly, it is used for angels in the New Testament.

Notes on verse 18c

ZZZ “initiatory” = embateuo. Related to “established” in v7. 1x in NT. Perhaps from embaino (to step onto – embark on a boat); {from en (in, on, at, by, with) + baino (see note H above)}. This is to enter, intrude.
AAAA “visions” = horao. Related to “human” in v8. See note S above.
BBBB “puffed up” = phusioo. 7x in NT. From phusa (air bellows) OR from phusia (inner nature, origin, birth, underlying make up, growth through natural processes like germination or progeny); from phuo (to produce, spring up, grow, germinate; perhaps originally meaning puff or blow). This is to puff up or inflate by blowing something up. Figuratively, it can mean swelled like an arrogant person with a large ego or someone who is proud/haughty.

Notes on verses 18d-19a

CCCC “without cause” = eike. 6x in NT. Probably from eiko (to be weak, submit, yield, give way); probably akin to hekon (freely, voluntary). This is nothing, idly, for no reason.
DDDD “human” = sarx. Same as “flesh” in v11. See note NN above.
EEEE “thinking” = nous. From noos (mind) OR from the same as ginosko (to know, recognize, realize, perceive, learn; gaining knowledge through personal experience). This is mind, understanding, reasoning faculty, intellect, capacity to reflect. It can refer to God’s mind or human minds – thoughts, feelings, will, or reflective thinking.
FFFF “holding fast” = krateo. From kratos (strength, power, dominion; vigor in a literal or figurative sense; power that is exercised). This is being strong or mighty so, by extension, to prevail or rule. It can also mean to seize, grasp hold of and thereby control.
GGGG “nourished” = epichoregeo. Related to “takes…captive” in v8 & “angels” in v18. 5x in NT. From epi (on, upon, against, what is fitting) + choregeo (to be the leader of a performing group, to help pay the expenses of a chorus; thus, to supply, furnish); {from choros (a dance or chorus) + ago (see note O above)}. This is lavishly provide or supply. It can also mean to help, nourish, or contribute.

and held togetherHHHH by its ligamentsIIII and tendons,JJJJ growsKKKK with a growthLLLL that is from God.

Notes on verse 19b

HHHH “held together” = sumbibazo. Related to “established” in v7 & “initiatory” in v18. 7x in NT. From sun (with, together with) + the same as basis (see note H above) OR sun (with, together with) + bibazo (to force); {from the same as basis (see note H above)}. This is joining together, considering, uniting, concluding, proving, or teaching. It is building reasoning – working through the steps to grasp truth by weaving ideas together to form a judgment or a conclusion. By extension, it is applying that understanding to showing or teaching.
IIII “ligaments” = haphe. Related to “triumphing” in v15. 2x in NT. From haptomai (see note KKK above). This is a join, fastening, or ligament.
JJJJ “tendons” = sundesmos. 4x in NT. From sundeo (to bind together; it can be use of one who is imprisoned – a person that one is imprisoned with); {from sun (with, together with) + deo (to tie, bind, fasten, impel, compel; to declare something against the law or prohibited)}. This is something that binds closely, a joint or ligament or chain. It can also be a binding principle that unites a concept.
KKKK “grows” = auxano. From auksano (to grow or enlarge, whether literal or figurative). This is growing whether in size or mature or greatness or some other metric.
LLLL “growth” = auxesis. Related to “grows” in v19. 2x in NT. From auxano (see note KKKK above). This is growth or increase.
